Operational controls and emergency preparedness. Documented controls for operations linked to significant aspects — including outsourced processes — plus preparedness and response plans for environmental emergencies such as spills or releases.
Competence, awareness, and communication. Trained, aware personnel and defined internal and external communication processes for environmental matters.
Monitoring, measurement, and evaluation of compliance. Performance tracked against indicators, and compliance status formally evaluated — not assumed.
Internal audit and management review. Scheduled audits of the EMS and structured leadership review of its performance and direction.
Improvement. Nonconformity and corrective action processes feeding demonstrable continual improvement in environmental performance.
The structure of the standard
ISO 14001 follows the Annex SL ten-clause pattern. Requirements begin at Clause 4 (Context of the organization) and run through Clause 5 (Leadership), Clause 6 (Planning) — home of environmental aspects, compliance obligations, and objectives — Clause 7 (Support), Clause 8 (Operation), including operational control and emergency preparedness, Clause 9 (Performance evaluation), and Clause 10 (Improvement). - Internal audit and management review. Verify the system internally and demonstrate leadership oversight.
- Stage 1 audit. Documentation and readiness review, often flagging weaknesses in aspect evaluation or compliance processes before the main event.
- Stage 2 audit. Full on-site assessment of the EMS in operation, leading to certification once findings are closed.
- Surveillance and recertification. Periodic surveillance audits and recertification, typically over a three-year cycle, keep the system effective and continually improving.
