Overview
This Integrated Environment and Quality Management System (EQMS) merges ISO 9001 for quality with ISO 14001 for environmental management into a single framework, so an organisation can deliver conforming products and services while systematically controlling its environmental aspects and impacts. Both standards share the Annex SL high-level structure, and the documentation exploits that shared clause architecture — one policy, one approach to documented information, one improvement cycle — while retaining discipline-specific controls. Scope spans the whole organisation, from customer requirements and service realisation to compliance obligations and environmental performance.
The spine runs from context and interested parties through leadership, risk-based thinking, aspect and impact evaluation, compliance obligations, objectives and targets, operational control, emergency preparedness, monitoring, internal audit and management review. A scheme and architecture document maps how the combined clauses, processes and records fit together; separate ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 audit checklists test each discipline on its own terms; a certification readiness gap assessment shows where the system still falls short. The same structure absorbs ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety or ISO 50001 for energy later. Certification comes from an accredited third-party body through a two-stage initial audit, then surveillance and triennial recertification, with integrated audits often combined to cut cost and disruption.
What this system covers
- Context, interested parties and scope — SWOT and PESTLE analysis of the combined system
- Environmental aspects and impacts — significance evaluation and the operational controls that follow
- Compliance obligations — legal register and periodic evaluation of compliance
- Risk and opportunity management feeding objectives and targets programmes
- Operational planning and control, including external provision and nonconforming outputs
- Emergency preparedness and response for environmental incidents
- Customer communication, satisfaction measurement and continual improvement
- Internal audit, management review, corrective action and certification readiness
Who it's for
Written for quality and environmental managers, process owners and top management maintaining two parallel systems. The trigger is usually a decision to integrate before recertification, or a stage one audit date in the diary. What follows is a framework in which document control, the audit programme and management review serve both standards at once.
