Overview
API Spec Q2 is the quality management system specification published by the American Petroleum Institute for organisations supplying services to the upstream petroleum and natural gas industry — well drilling, completion, workover, servicing and related field activities. It builds on the quality management framework of ISO 9001 and adds requirements written for service supply organisations rather than product manufacturers, applying a process approach to service planning, service quality plans, contingency planning, risk assessment and management of change.
Around a quality manual, a process interaction map and an exhibit describing the API Q2 certification scheme sit the controls an assessor works through: validation of service-affecting activities, competence of field personnel, control of monitoring and measuring equipment, preventive maintenance, calibration and traceability of records. Supplier evaluation, nonconformity reporting, corrective action and management review close the loop, and a gap assessment tests the system against the API registration and licensing programme before an assessor arrives.
What this system covers
- Service delivery planning — service quality plans and validation of service-affecting activities
- Contingency planning and management of change — service interruption and control of changes to field work
- Risk management — hazard identification, risk registers and treatment of service-affecting risk
- Competence of field personnel — training records, competency matrices and crew onboarding
- Equipment control — functional testing, preventive maintenance, calibration and verification of measuring equipment
- Supply chain control — evaluation and approval of suppliers and contracted services
- Nonconformity and corrective action — reporting, root cause, closure and analysis of data
- Registration readiness — internal audit programme, API Q2 checklist and gap assessment
Who it's for
Written for drilling contractors, well service companies, and inspection and testing providers whose operator clients insist on API-conformant suppliers, or who have entered the API registration process. The quality manager adopting it starts from a complete, editable framework and spends the time on implementation and evidence rather than on drafting procedures.
