Overview

ISO/IEC 17020 governs the operation of bodies performing inspection, and this build treats it, in a 2026 conformity-assessment context, for bodies whose work is physical and largely statutory: industrial plant, pressure equipment, electrical installations, vehicles, construction works and scheme-driven inspection. Type A, B and C bodies differ by level of independence, and the standard demands that the body be structured and governed so that objectivity survives ownership, commercial pressure and conflicting activities. Competence covers the selection, training, authorisation and continuing monitoring of inspectors; methods must be validated and equipment controlled; and reports, certificates and statements of conformity must follow declared decision rules.

The documentation is arranged by the standard's own clause groups, then goes past them into the work itself. Work instructions and field checklists cover lifting accessories, cranes and hoists, pressure vessels, safety relief valves, electrical installations, lifts and escalators, scaffolding, local exhaust ventilation, fire safety systems and storage tanks. Regional reference material sets out the GCC standards framework, UAE food inspection authorities by emirate, Sharjah authorities and the OSHJ codes of practice, and client-facing documents are supplied bilingually in Arabic and English.

What this system covers

  • Independence and impartiality — type A declarations, an impartiality risk register and scheduled review
  • Field inspection methods — validated written instructions and checklists for each equipment type, applied at the work face
  • Decision rules and statements of conformity applied to inspection outcomes
  • Inspector authorisation and witnessed monitoring against a defined scope of inspection activities
  • Inspection reporting — report verification, scope and authorisation cross-checks, authorised signatories
  • Gulf regulatory context — GCC standards framework, UAE emirate food inspection authorities, Sharjah authorities and OSHJ codes
  • Bilingual Arabic and English documents for regional clients and authorities
  • Accreditation readiness — implementation planning, internal audit, nonconformity and corrective action

Who it's for

Inspection bodies working in the Gulf on statutory and in-service equipment inspection, and the quality managers who need the management system and the field method set in one place. The trigger is an accreditation assessment, a scheme approval from a local authority, or a contract that will only accept accredited inspection. The end state is a body whose inspectors work to written methods and whose reports are verified against an authorised scope.
