Overview
A fragrance that breaks an IFRA restriction can stop a product launch or a customer order. Each formula has to be checked against prohibitions, restrictions and specifications for the product category it will be used in, including what natural ingredients contribute. Customers then expect a Certificate of Conformity that holds up.
This system makes that work routine. Products are placed in their IFRA categories, and formulas are screened for prohibitions, maximum acceptable concentrations per category, specifications, contributions from natural ingredients and Schiff bases, and flavour status for lip and oral products. Worked maximum-dosage calculations use clearly labelled illustrative values, not IFRA limits. Supplier certificates are verified, and when you supply a fragrance mixture yourself, you complete IFRA's own Certificate of Conformity template without changing its wording.
The IFRA Standards themselves are not included. The system points you to IFRA's free online Standards Library, and to the IFRA Guidance Tables for the full lists of product types. It draws on the IFRA Code of Practice (April 2021) and tracks IFRA Amendments, with a watch-list and readiness checklist for the 52nd Amendment. IFRA does not certify products or issue certificates, and the system sets out the wording to avoid when describing compliance. Standards are referenced by number and title only, and no standard text is included. AGS is independent and is not affiliated with IFRA.
What this system covers
- Product categorisation: a guide to placing each product in its IFRA category, pointing to the IFRA Guidance Tables for product types.
- Formula screening: a formula review form with a contribution table and a per-category maximum dosage calculation.
- Natural ingredients: a procedure for natural ingredient contributions, using ISO 9235 nomenclature for identification.
- Certificates of Conformity: supplier certificate verification, and completion rules for IFRA's template when you are the supplier.
- Amendment tracking: a process for following IFRA Amendments, with a 52nd Amendment watch-list and implementation checklist.
- Audit and CAPA: internal audit checklists covering the whole system, with corrective and preventive action.
- Training and competence: a four-level training and competence scheme with training documents.
- Other regulatory checks: EU cosmetic and allergen rules, including Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 and Regulation 1223/2009, named as separate checks outside IFRA.
