Overview
ISO 29001:2020 specifies quality management system requirements for the design, development, production, installation and service of products for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. It supplements ISO 9001 with provisions for the particular risks and technical demands of these sectors, where reliability, safety and defect prevention are paramount, and it reaches manufacturers of equipment and materials as well as related service providers. On top of the Annex SL structure and risk-based thinking it inherits, it adds sector requirements for design control, contingency planning, preventive maintenance and validation of processes.
This set models the business as a chain of processes: production and blending, quality control and product release, storage and preservation, dispatch and delivery, engineering and maintenance. The operational layer is where the sector shows — incoming material inspection, blending readiness, finished product release, preservation checks, preventive maintenance checkpoints, defined calibration periodicity and a housekeeping, HSE and layout inspection.
What this system covers
- Production and blending control — readiness before a run and control during it
- Quality control and product release — incoming inspection, release and disposition of nonconforming output
- Storage, preservation and dispatch — protecting product identity and condition to the customer
- Design and development — planning, review, verification, validation and change control
- Engineering and maintenance — maintenance schedules, equipment history, critical spares and calibration periodicity
- External provider control — purchasing, and the evaluation, selection and approval of suppliers
- Risk-based governance — risk assessment, quality objectives, internal audit and management review
- Competence and awareness — competence requirements, induction and ISO 29001 awareness material
Who it's for
Built for quality and operations managers at blending plants, refineries and manufacturers of equipment and materials serving the energy supply chain. The trigger is usually a major operator's procurement process asking suppliers to demonstrate conformity, or a scheduled audit by an accredited certification body. The plant ends up with production control, release, maintenance and supplier management traceable to the clauses an auditor asks about.
