Overview
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world's first international standard specifying requirements for an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). Its purpose is to help organizations establish, implement, maintain and continually improve a management system for the responsible development, provision and use of AI, balancing innovation with governance, risk management and trustworthiness. The scope applies to any organization of any size or sector that develops, provides or uses AI-based products or services, and it is intended for leadership, AI and data practitioners, risk and compliance functions, auditors and stakeholders accountable for responsible AI. The standard follows the Annex SL high-level structure, with clauses addressing organizational context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation and improvement, and it embeds the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle for continual improvement. It requires organizations to address AI-specific concerns through mechanisms such as AI risk assessment and treatment and AI system impact assessment, considering effects on individuals, groups and society. The standard includes a set of reference controls in its annexes together with implementation guidance, covering areas such as policies for AI, internal organization, resources for AI systems, impact assessment, the AI system life cycle, data management, information for interested parties, and third-party and supplier relationships. It aligns with the broader AI standards landscape, including ISO/IEC 22989 for terminology, ISO/IEC 23894 for AI risk management and ISO/IEC 38507 for governance, and its Annex SL basis allows integration with ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC 27701 and ISO 9001.
