Overview

Packaging is judged on what the materials are made of, not only on how cleanly they are made. This system documents Halal control over the manufacture and handling of packaging materials for Halal products under the United Arab Emirates national Halal scheme, whose UAE.S standards adopt the GSO 2055 framework and are coordinated through the Emirati standardisation and conformity authorities; requirements stay aligned with the wider Gulf system, with national oversight retained.

Substrates, coatings, inks, adhesives and release agents must be free from porcine and other prohibited animal derivatives and from impermissible alcohol, with supplier declarations and certificates held for animal-origin inputs such as stearates and glycerine. Compliance is checked against UAE.S GSO 2652:2021 for Halal packaging and UAE.S GSO 2055-1:2015 and UAE.S 993:2022 for animal-origin inputs, with an internal Halal committee approving new materials and acting on audit findings.

What this system covers

  • Composition screening of substrates, coatings, inks, adhesives and release agents for prohibited derivatives and impermissible alcohol
  • Animal-origin inputs such as stearates and glycerine, evidenced by supplier declarations, certificates and tazkeya
  • Conversion runs — printing, laminating, coating and cutting worked to the approved specification
  • Premises segregation and dedicated lines, with line conversion released before the next job
  • Hygiene and equipment cleaning after conversion: rollers, anilox, ink trays and adhesive lines
  • Reel, sheet and pallet identification in the warehouse and on delivery, keeping Halal-designated stock separate
  • Halal mark on pack, with customer artwork approved before print
  • Traceability from an ink or adhesive lot to the reels and cartons it entered, with complaint and recall routes

Who it's for

Flexible packaging, carton, film and container manufacturers whose food and cosmetic customers have made Halal certification a condition of supply, and converters entering the UAE and GCC market. The question put to a converter is a supply-chain one: what is in the ink, the adhesive and the release agent, and who says so. This system answers it material by material, in the form a UAE-approved or accredited certification body assesses at certification, surveillance and renewal.
