In aerospace, quality is not a competitive advantage — it is the condition of existence. A counterfeit fastener, an uncontrolled process change, or a missed inspection step can end lives and end companies. That is the world AS9100D was written for. This guide covers the internationally recognized quality management system standard for aviation, space, and defense: what it is, who must hold it, what it adds to ISO 9001, how it is structured, and the certification path through the industry's uniquely rigorous oversight scheme. What is AS9100D?

AS9100D is the quality management system standard for the aviation, space, and defense industries, published by the aerospace standards bodies and maintained through the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG) — a cooperative of the world's major aerospace manufacturers. Its purpose is to define requirements that ensure the consistent delivery of safe, reliable, and conforming products and services in a sector where failures can have catastrophic consequences.

Structurally, AS9100D incorporates the full text of ISO 9001:2015 — every clause, word for word — and then layers extensive aerospace-specific requirements on top. It therefore inherits the Annex SL High Level Structure, the process approach, risk-based thinking, and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, while adding the disciplines the industry considers non-negotiable: product safety, counterfeit-part prevention, configuration management, first article inspection, and more. Revision D, the current edition, aligned the standard with ISO 9001:2015 and strengthened these sector requirements.

Who needs AS9100D?

The standard applies throughout the aerospace and defense supply chain:

  • Manufacturers of parts and assemblies — machining, sheet metal, composites, castings, electronics — supplying airframers and engine makers
  • Maintenance and service providers supporting the sector (with related standards such as AS9110 for repair stations, built on the same foundation)
  • Distributors of aerospace parts and materials (served by AS9120, again derived from AS9100)
  • Defense contractors and their sub-tiers producing to military specifications
  • Any organization whose customers require an OASIS-listed, AS9100-certified supplier

The commercial reality is unambiguous: for most work with primes, airframers, engine makers, and defense contractors, certification is a mandatory condition of doing business. Prime contractors select and monitor suppliers through the industry's online aerospace supplier database, where certification status and audit results are recorded and visible.

What's inside an AS9100D management system

Everything ISO 9001 requires is present — policy, objectives, context, leadership, competence, operational control, internal audit, management review, improvement — and then the aerospace layer begins:

Product safety. Documented processes to assure the safety of products throughout their lifecycle, from design assumptions to in-service behavior.

Counterfeit parts prevention. Controls to prevent counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product — supplier controls, verification, quarantine, and reporting disciplines that have become defining features of aerospace quality.

Configuration management. Rigorous control of product identity, design data, and changes, so that what is built, tested, and delivered always matches the approved configuration.

First article inspection (FAI). Formal verification that a production process yields a product conforming to every drawing requirement before rate production proceeds.

Control of special processes. Heat treatment, welding, plating, NDT, and other processes whose results cannot be fully verified by later inspection must be qualified, controlled, and often performed by approved sources.

Risk and project management. Operational risk management applied to program execution — schedules, resources, transfers of work — not only to product characteristics.

On-time and on-quality delivery performance. The standard expects organizations to measure and act on delivery and quality performance, mirroring how primes score their suppliers.

Human factors awareness. Recognition that error has organizational causes — fatigue, pressure, communication — and that corrective action must account for them.

Traceability, change control, and documentation. Rigorous identification, traceability, and record-keeping to satisfy customer, statutory, and regulatory requirements across long product lifecycles and complex supply chains.

How the standard is structured

AS9100D follows the ten-clause ISO 9001:2015 skeleton — context (4), leadership (5), planning (6), support (7), operation (8), performance evaluation (9), improvement (10) — with the aerospace additions embedded in the relevant clauses and printed alongside the ISO text. The densest aerospace content sits in Clause 8, Operation: planning, design and development, control of external providers, production control, FAI, and post-delivery support all carry substantial sector-specific requirements.

The road to certification

AS9100 certification operates under the aerospace industry's ICOP (Industry Controlled Other Party) scheme — certification bodies are accredited and additionally overseen by the industry itself, with results recorded in the OASIS database used by primes to select and monitor suppliers. The journey:

  1. Gap analysis against ISO 9001 plus the AS9100D additions — counterfeit parts, configuration management, FAI, product safety, and risk management are the most common gaps for ISO 9001-certified entrants.
  2. Implementation. Build the additional processes, train personnel (auditors will probe awareness of product safety and human factors on the shop floor), and generate operating records.
  3. Internal audit and management review, completed with evidence before the external audit.
  4. Stage 1 audit — documentation and readiness review by the certification body's aerospace-qualified auditors.
  5. Stage 2 audit — full on-site assessment using the industry's standardized process-based methods; nonconformities must be closed to the scheme's strict rules.
  6. Certification and OASIS listing, followed by surveillance audits and recertification across the three-year cycle, with performance visible to the industry.
