Overview

AS9100D is the quality management system standard for the aviation, space and defence industries, maintained through the International Aerospace Quality Group. It applies across the supply chain to manufacturers of parts and assemblies, maintenance and service providers, and distributors serving airframers, engine makers and defence contractors. It incorporates the full text of ISO 9001:2015, then layers on aerospace requirements covering product safety, prevention of counterfeit parts, configuration management, first article inspection, control of special processes, risk and project management, on-time and on-quality delivery performance, and human factors awareness.

The documentation is organised around that layering. A quality manual and a process model describing the sequence and interaction of processes sit above process-approach exhibits for design, engineering, production, purchasing, quality control and stores. A quality and process control plan governs the shop floor, supported by procedures for first article inspection, purchasing, identification and traceability of products and control of nonconforming product, while a compliance matrix ties each document to the requirement it answers.

What this system covers

  • First article inspection — verification and record of the first production article before series delivery
  • Product safety, counterfeit parts and foreign object damage — awareness material and prevention checks
  • Configuration management — controlling the definition of the product and every change to it
  • Special processes and production control — process exhibits, the control plan and production records
  • Supply chain control — provider evaluation, goods receipt inspection and identification of product
  • Nonconforming product — containment, disposition, disposal and root cause
  • Delivery performance — monitoring on-time and on-quality performance and acting on it
  • Certification readiness — AS9100D audit checklist and stage one to stage two readiness
