Overview

Sanitation Safety Planning is the World Health Organization's risk-based methodology for managing health risks along the sanitation service chain — from the toilet and containment, through emptying, transport and treatment, to safe end use or disposal. This instructor-led package teaches SSP as a working cycle: assembling the SSP team and mapping the system as it actually operates, identifying hazards and hazardous events at each step, assessing exposure groups and the risks they carry, selecting and validating control measures, then setting out incremental improvement plans that fit real budgets and timescales.

The part of the method that keeps a plan alive is treated just as seriously: monitoring, verification and periodic review. Trainers deliver from session-by-session facilitation plans; participants work through structured exercises and worked examples; the visual toolkit supplies the master presentation in editable form and as a PDF handout, with brand assets included; testing and scoring evidence what participants learned; and registration, attendance and certification material runs the cohort, with a READ ME overview orienting the coordinator before the first session. It is the training companion to the Sanitation Safety Planning (SSP) Management System documentation, so utilities, municipalities, regulators and wastewater-reuse programmes can apply what that system documents.

What this system covers

  • The sanitation service chain — containment, emptying, transport, treatment and safe end use or disposal as one system
  • SSP team assembly and system mapping — who belongs on the team, and how the system is described before assessment
  • Hazard and hazardous event identification at each step of the chain
  • Exposure groups and risk assessment — who is exposed, to what, and which risks are addressed first
  • Control measure selection and validation — choosing controls and confirming that they work
  • Incremental improvement planning — sequencing what can realistically be fixed, and by when
  • Monitoring, verification and review — the routines that keep a sanitation safety plan current

Who it's for

Water and sanitation utilities, municipalities, health and environment regulators, and wastewater-reuse programmes that have committed to Sanitation Safety Planning and now need people who can run it. The trigger is usually a regulator or funder expecting an SSP, a reuse scheme that must show health risks along the chain are managed, or adoption of the SSP management system without the internal capability to apply it. Delivery leaves trained and assessed staff behind, and a course repeatable for the next intake.
