Overview
Testing an AI system can itself cause harm if nobody controls it. This system governs the testing without performing it. Every test is justified by risk, authorised before it starts, bounded by a scope and rules of engagement, carried out by qualified parties, evidenced and reported. Each finding is then followed through remediation and retest to closure. No test proceeds without documented authorisation.
It starts with the system under test: how critical it is, what depends on it, and where a single point of failure could stop the business. From there it sets resilience requirements and acceptance criteria, an annual test programme, and a scenario library linked to the tests that cover each scenario.
The resilience control framework maps to the NIST AI RMF 1.0, with an orientation to ISO/IEC TR 24029-1:2021 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023 for your own review. No legal or regulatory obligation is pre-filled. You add the ones that apply to you. Standards are referenced by number and title only, and no standard text is included.
What this system covers
- Criticality and dependencies: AI system criticality, business impact, resilience risk, dependency management and a single-point-of-failure assessment.
- Test planning: resilience requirements and acceptance criteria, a test strategy, annual programme and schedule, coverage and priority matrices, and a test planning set.
- Authorisation and scope: test authorisation including emergency and change authorisation, rules of engagement, safety constraints and stop conditions.
- Scenarios: a resilience scenario library, scenario template, scenario risk assessment and scenario-to-test matrix.
- Test types governed: red-team exercises, security and penetration tests, robustness evaluations, failure, stress and recovery tests, and third-party testers.
- Findings to closure: evidence with chain of custody, a severity method, remediation, retest, closure and residual risk acceptance.
- Reporting and assurance: management reporting and review, a resilience evidence pack, self-assessment, maturity and gap assessment, readiness review and a 90-day plan.
Who it's for
Organisations that rely on AI for important business processes, including regulated sectors, service providers, public bodies and growing companies that adopt external AI services. It is used by AI governance leads, resilience and risk managers, AI system and business owners, cybersecurity and test managers, business continuity and incident teams, compliance and internal review professionals, and the consultants who support them.
It pairs with the AI Cybersecurity Management System, which owns the security controls, and the AI Performance, Bias & Robustness Management System, which owns assessment content and metrics.
