Overview
FAMI-QS is the internationally recognised certification scheme for the safety and quality of specialty feed ingredients and their mixtures: additives, functional and technological ingredients, premixtures and certain feed materials. It reaches every operator in that chain, from manufacturers, processors and blenders to traders, importers and businesses that only handle or store the products. The scheme is written around the hazards specific to feed used in animal nutrition and, downstream, to the safety of the human food chain, and it is recognised as a code of practice under European feed hygiene legislation.
The system combines HACCP principles, prerequisite programmes and good manufacturing and hygiene practice with the demands of feed law. Hazard analysis covers biological, chemical and physical hazards and, distinctively for this sector, undesirable substances and cross-contamination between products. Around that sit management responsibility, control of production processes, traceability, recall, supplier and outsourcing management, and defences against feed fraud and intentional adulteration. FAMI-QS is the reference scheme for the specialty feed ingredient sector rather than a GFSI food-manufacturing benchmark, although it operates in a comparable, HACCP-based manner, with certification granted after a third-party audit by an approved certification body and maintained through surveillance.
What this system covers
- Hazard identification and analysis for feed — biological, chemical and physical hazards alongside undesirable substances and carry-over
- Prerequisite programmes and good manufacturing practice — cleaning and sanitation, housekeeping, pest control, preventive maintenance
- The HACCP plan itself — critical control points, corrective action, verification and validation
- Traceability, positive recall and crisis management, including notification under the scheme
- Supplier approval and audit, incoming material inspection and control of outsourced activity
- Personnel hygiene, medical screening, induction and demonstrated competence
- Management system discipline — document and data control, records retention, risk management, internal audit, management review and complaint handling
Who it's for
Producers and blenders of feed additives and premixtures, and the traders, importers and storage operators who move them, in businesses too specialised for a general food standard to fit. The purchase follows a customer that buys only from FAMI-QS certified suppliers, a first certification audit being scheduled, or a feed hygiene obligation the current paperwork will not satisfy. The outcome is a feed safety and quality system in which each scheme requirement has a home, an owner and a record behind it.
