Overview
Packaging destined for Halal products falls inside the Halal Assurance System framework of the GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), the regional standardization body of the Gulf Cooperation Council states, and this kit documents that system for converters and packaging manufacturers. The framework expects internal control that is documented, self-sustaining and continuous rather than assembled ahead of an inspection, applied alongside the GSO 2055 series of product and certification standards. Scope runs across the manufacture and handling of packaging materials destined for Halal products.
Substrates, coatings, inks, adhesives and release agents must be free from porcine and other prohibited animal derivatives and from impermissible alcohol content, which puts slip agents, stearates, glycerine and gelatine-derived additives under documented scrutiny and calls for supplier declarations and certificates for every raw material of animal origin. Migration is handled as a technical question in its own right, with ink and solvent verification supported by dedicated additives and migration guidance. Hygiene and contamination control run through compounding, extrusion, lamination and forming; artwork, plate and printing control keep the Halal mark aligned with what was approved; and segregated, clearly identified storage means material intended for Halal lines is never mixed with the rest.
What this system covers
- Packaging material approval, covering substrates, coatings, adhesives and additives before first use
- Animal-derived additive control for slip agents, stearates, glycerine and gelatine, verified against supplier declarations
- Inks, solvents, coatings and adhesives, including alcohol content and migration verification
- Production control through compounding, extrusion, lamination and forming
- Changeover, cleaning and ritual cleansing between jobs
- Artwork, plate, printing and Halal mark control
- Segregated storage, identification, handling and dispatch to Halal customers
- Traceability, non-conforming product, recall and internal Halal audit against GSO 2055-1
Who it's for
Technical and quality managers at film, carton, label and closure manufacturers whose customers hold Halal certification and are asking them to prove that what they supply is compatible with it. The trigger is usually a brand owner extending Halal requirements down its supply chain, or the plant applying to a certification body in its own right. Adapted to the site's substrates and print processes, it answers questions on additives, inks and segregation whenever a customer or auditor asks.
