Overview
Certification under GSO 2055-2:2021 addresses the requirements applicable to bodies providing Halal certification and to the associated certification process within the Gulf region, under the GCC Standardization Organization. The standard's purpose is to ensure that Halal certificates issued to producers and suppliers are granted through competent, impartial and consistently operated conformity assessment, giving confidence to markets and consumers that certified products genuinely meet Islamic dietary and lawfulness requirements. Its scope encompasses the accreditation-relevant criteria for certification bodies, auditor competence, decision-making independence and the procedural rigor of assessment, complementing the general Halal product requirements defined in the companion GSO 2055-1 standard. In practical application, the Halal criteria enforced include exclusive use of permissible ingredients, proper Islamic slaughter for meat and poultry, absolute exclusion of swine, blood, carrion, alcohol and other prohibited materials, disciplined segregation of Halal and non-Halal goods, dependable traceability from raw material to finished product, and rigorous prevention of cross-contamination throughout processing, storage and transport. A certified organization is expected to maintain a Halal Assurance System, guided by an internal Halal committee that manages documented controls, ingredient verification, internal audits, employee training and corrective actions to keep the system effective on a continuous basis. The benefits of GSO 2055-2 certification include strengthened trust among Gulf importers, regulators and Muslim consumers, reduced risk of non-conformity or fraudulent claims, and improved competitiveness for producers. Crucially, it supports market access across GCC member states, where recognition of GSO-based certification facilitates smoother import clearance and retail acceptance. In the certification context, an accredited certification body conducts document review and on-site auditing, issues the Halal certificate upon successful assessment, and performs periodic surveillance audits and renewals to verify that Halal integrity is maintained over the life of the certificate.
