Overview
Nobody eats shower gel, yet the retailer stocking it wants much of the evidence it asks of a food supplier. IFS HPC version 3 writes that expectation down for makers and processors of detergents and cleaning products, cosmetics, toiletries and related consumer goods, including those handling loose product during packing. The hazards are those of a non-food product meeting skin, hair and the domestic environment: chemical safety, formulation control and labelling that matches the bottle.
An HPC audit rests on the familiar IFS architecture but puts its weight on the chemistry and the pack. Formulation changes are re-approved before they reach the line, raw materials carry specifications, labels state the correct contents and instructions for use, and loose product is kept from cross-mixing where formulations share equipment. Traceability, product defence and fraud mitigation guard integrity to despatch, and shared IFS methodology lets a retailer read the result alongside its food certificates. Approved certification bodies audit against the IFS scoring system with knock-out criteria, and certificates run for a defined period maintained by renewal audit.
What this system covers
- Hazard analysis and risk assessment, and the product safety plan it drives.
- Specification and formula control: raw material approval, formulation change and the labelling that follows it.
- Loose product during packing: contamination control and allergen risk mitigation.
- Personal hygiene, protective clothing and health screening across production, filling and packing.
- Foreign material, glass and brittle material control, cleaning and disinfection, and pest monitoring.
- Product defence, fraud mitigation and traceability, tested against recall readiness.
- Supplier approval, goods receipt, maintenance and the control of records.
Who it's for
It usually begins with a line in a retail customer's supplier requirements: IFS HPC certification, before the next review. That lands on a quality or technical manager at a contract filler, an own-label producer or a brand owner, or a team moving an established system onto version 3. Once your formulations and lines are described, the audit meets a scored self-assessment and records showing the system has run rather than been assembled.
