Overview

This documentation set applies the SMIIC Halal Assurance System to processed food manufacture and gelatine production, on revision 01 of the SMI-003 technical scheme. It works to OIC/SMIIC 1, the Halal food standard of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries, an Organisation of Islamic Cooperation body, with OIC/SMIIC 2 covering the certification bodies. Among member states that adopt or recognise SMIIC standards, that shared basis makes an assessment in one country readable in another.

Two controls carry most of the technical weight. Alcohol content is calculated and verified against each formulation and input rather than taken from a supplier declaration, and Halal control points are monitored batch by batch, the monitoring log reconciled to the batch production record. Gelatine and collagen production is controlled separately, with raw material verification behind each lot, and the shipping certificate register ties every certificate to the batches it covers.

What this system covers

  • Alcohol content control — calculation and verification across formulations, inputs and finished product
  • Gelatine and collagen production — raw material verification and the processing conditions specific to the line
  • Additives, enzymes, GMO and special substances — status settled before a material enters a formulation
  • Halal control point monitoring — HCP and HCCP plans reconciled to batch production records
  • Segregation, dedicated personnel and line clearance — scheduling, changeover and ritual cleansing between runs
  • Packaging and labelling — declaration accuracy, with formulation and label changes registered
  • Shipping certificates, traceability and recall — certificate issue tied to batch records, with withdrawal when needed

Who it's for

It is aimed at the Halal committee and QA function of a food, ingredient or gelatine business — the people who approve raw materials, sign off changeovers and issue Halal shipping certificates. It is usually taken up when something changes: a new gelatine supplier, a reformulation that alters alcohol content, a new export destination, or a surveillance visit that samples records. It gives them a defined control for each decision and a record that can be produced afterwards without reconstruction.
