Overview
FSSC 22000 version 6 is a GFSI-recognised food safety certification scheme built on ISO 22000, sector-specific prerequisite programme requirements and a defined set of additional FSSC requirements. It is used in food and feed manufacturing, food packaging production, catering, retail, and transport and storage, with certification scope fixed by the relevant food chain category. The documentation keeps that three-part construction: the ISO 22000 clauses, the prerequisite programme specification from the ISO/TS 22002 series or its equivalent, and each additional requirement.
ISO 22000 supplies the High-Level Structure, the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, risk-based thinking at organisational and operational level, and prerequisite programmes combined with HACCP principles. The additional requirements sit on top, and version 6 tightens alignment with the updated ISO 22000 while raising expectations on food safety culture, quality, equipment management and environmental sustainability in line with GFSI benchmarking. Certification runs through accredited certification bodies: a two-stage initial audit, annual surveillance and periodic recertification on a three-year cycle, with provision for unannounced audits.
What this system covers
- The FSSC additional requirements: services, labelling, food defence, food fraud, allergens, environmental monitoring, equipment, food loss and waste
- Food safety and quality culture, with scheme logo and claims use
- Hazard control: preliminary analysis, prerequisite programmes, hazard identification and the HACCP plan
- Prerequisite programmes to ISO/TS 22002-1, checked against the specification and by site inspection
- Purchasing and supplier control: incoming inspection, approved vendors and supplier audit scheduling
- Equipment and infrastructure: preventive maintenance, breakdown history and building fabric
- Product design and development, production planning and disposal of non-conforming product
- Documented information: master lists, record retention and a version 6 requirement map
Who it's for
Food and feed manufacturers, packaging producers and food chain operators whose customers require GFSI recognition, and quality managers already certified who are working through the move to version 6. The purchase point is a stage 1 audit date, a transition deadline, or the discovery that the additional requirements have no documented home. The end state is ISO structure, prerequisite programmes referenced to the technical specification, and every additional requirement traceable when an unannounced auditor asks.
