Overview
A logistics provider creates none of the product it is judged on. IFS Logistics version 3 is built around that fact, covering transport, storage, distribution, loading and unloading for food and non-food goods in frozen, chilled and ambient regimes. It is written for the middle of the chain: warehouses, cold stores, hauliers and distribution operators, where safety and quality are preserved rather than created.
The requirements are the familiar IFS ones, but the question they answer here is narrower: how a provider evidences control over goods it never owns. That means monitored temperature regimes with a documented response when one drifts; traceability that survives consolidation, part-loads and cross-docking; contamination control while stock sits under someone else's name; and the management of outsourced services, because subcontracted transport remains the provider's answer to its customer. It is designed to sit alongside IFS Food and IFS Broker so assurance runs continuously along the chain, and IFS standards are recognised within the GFSI framework where benchmarked.
What this system covers
- Goods receipt and despatch: inspection on arrival, product identification and rejection of loads that fail.
- Temperature and condition control across frozen, chilled and ambient stock, with monitoring records.
- Transport — vehicle condition, loading discipline and the handover points where custody changes hands.
- Product handling and contamination control in storage, picking and consolidation.
- Traceability tested against recall, with product defence and fraud mitigation for goods held for others.
- Contract agreement and the control of suppliers, service providers and subcontracted transport or storage.
- Premises and infrastructure, staff hygiene and facilities, cleaning and disinfection, and waste management.
Who it's for
Third-party logistics providers, cold-store operators and distribution businesses reach for this when a customer makes an IFS certificate a condition of trade, or a tender assumes one is already held. For the quality or operations manager the first work is scoping: which sites, which product categories, which temperature regimes, which parts subcontracted. The audit then meets a hazard analysis matched to real handling steps, and traceability across every stage in the provider's care.
