Overview
In chemicals, biochemicals and cosmetics, Halal status is rarely legible on a specification sheet: a processed derivative arrives named by what it does rather than by the material it was made from, so its origin has to be established rather than read. This documentation builds a Halal Assurance System around that problem, reconciling Malaysia's JAKIM, Indonesia's SJPH under BPJPH, the Gulf GSO standards, the UAE national standard UAE.S and the OIC/SMIIC series into one approach that follows the strictest common criterion where they differ.
Material origin is the first of two control lines. Glycerine, stearates, collagen, enzymes and fatty-acid derivatives must be traced to a permissible source, with supplier certification held for everything of animal origin. Alcohol is the second: a stated position on ethanol and solvent use consistent with the applicable Halal rulings, applied at formulation and evidenced batch by batch. Purity and cleanliness (tahara), najis-free production and GMP control sit around both, owned by an internal Halal committee that approves materials and suppliers, audits, trains personnel and closes out corrective actions.
What this system covers
- Ingredient origin verification — glycerine, stearates, collagen, enzymes and fatty-acid derivatives traced to a permissible source before approval.
- Ethanol and alcohol control — a documented position on ethanol and solvent use, with a source declaration for every material that carries alcohol.
- Najis-free production and segregation — line dedication, sequencing and physical separation from non-permissible materials.
- Purity and cleanliness (tahara) — ritual cleansing (sertu) of vessels, lines and utensils, with the verification that proves it.
- Formulation and batch control — records linking each batch to an approved formulation and approved suppliers.
- GMP manufacture — batch manufacturing records, in-process control and a release decision taken against the approved specification.
- Packaging, labelling and Halal mark — artwork and claim wording approved before print, with the supplier declaration behind the claim held on file.
Who it's for
Cosmetics and personal care manufacturers, contract fillers, and speciality chemical, biochemical and ingredient producers. Most arrive with a JAKIM or BPJPH application in progress, a customer demanding Halal-certified inputs, or a surveillance audit against a scheme they have never documented for. They leave with ingredient decisions, alcohol positions and cleansing verification written down and defensible.
