Overview
ISO 14007 and ISO 14008 address the economic dimension of environmental management. ISO 14007 provides the framework for determining and communicating environmental costs and benefits, including the value of an organisation's environmental impacts and its dependencies on natural resources and ecosystem services. ISO 14008 sets out methods for the monetary valuation of environmental impacts and related environmental aspects, giving a structured basis for assigning monetary values to effects on the environment and on human health. The two are commonly applied together, and this system runs them as one documented process so that a valuation can be repeated, reviewed and defended.
The procedures move in sequence: context, scope and boundary setting; identification of environmental aspects, impacts and dependencies; planning a cost-benefit assessment; determining costs and benefits; selecting and applying a valuation methodology; data collection, value transfer and data quality; uncertainty and sensitivity analysis; then reporting and disclosure through a review-and-release control. Worksheets, a method selection guide and an illustrative worked example carry the technique, while separate conformance checklists test the work against ISO 14007 and ISO 14008 in turn. Both standards are methodological guidance rather than requirement standards written for certification, so organisations apply them internally or alongside a certified system such as ISO 14001, supporting natural-capital accounting, ecosystem-service assessment and ESG disclosure.
What this system covers
- Scope and boundary setting — what is being valued, for which decision, and within which boundary
- Aspects, impacts and dependencies — including reliance on natural resources and ecosystem services
- Valuation methodology — selecting an approach and recording the reasoning behind the choice
- Data, value transfer and data quality — sourcing values, justifying transfers and testing fitness for use
- Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis — establishing how far the result moves and reporting the range
- Reporting and disclosure — assumptions, limitations, review and controlled release of the figures
- Conformance and competence — clause-level checks against both standards, training and internal audit
Who it's for
Environmental and sustainability managers, accountants, economists and analysts who have been asked what an environmental impact is actually worth: by a board weighing an investment, by a natural-capital or ESG disclosure with a deadline, or by an environmental team needing to prioritise actions on something firmer than judgement. The outcome is a valuation with a documented boundary, a stated method, traceable data, an honest uncertainty range, and a report that survives review by the people who have to sign it.
