Overview
ISO 20121 is the international standard for event sustainability management systems (ESMS), developed with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as its reference application and now the leading global reference for sustainable event delivery. It integrates sustainability across the event lifecycle — planning and procurement, delivery, post-event evaluation — balancing environmental responsibility with financial viability and social outcomes, and it reaches organisers, venues, caterers, production and logistics companies and contractors at every scale.
This is the extended documentation set. Above a deep procedure layer — context, risk and opportunity, legal requirements, objectives and targets, operational planning and control, competence, communication, documented information and records, control of monitoring and measuring equipment, emergency preparedness and response, sustainable development issues engagement, audit, review and corrective action — sit the forms and checklists used where the work happens: event activities planning, event inspection, work permits, maintenance checkpoints, waste storage areas, fire fighting and first aid. The High-Level Structure keeps the set compatible with ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
What this system covers
- Sustainable development policy and principles — commitments, issues engagement and interested-party expectations
- Event lifecycle control — operational planning across procurement, build, delivery and evaluation
- Site readiness and inspection — activities planning checks, event inspections and waste storage control
- Emergency preparedness and response — fire-fighting provision, extinguisher locations and first-aid checks
- Permits, plant and calibration — work permits, maintenance checkpoints and control of measuring equipment
- Objectives and performance data — event targets, progress monitoring reports and loss observation
- Competence and communication — skill requirement matrices, awareness packs and a communication matrix
- Audit, nonconformity and improvement — audit schedules and checklists, NC reports and corrective action
Who it's for
Venue operators, production companies and in-house event teams that run their own crews, plant and waste streams and need operational records to show an auditor or client alongside the policy documents. It suits a buyer who already knows the standard and wants depth on the ground: inspection records, permits, emergency arrangements, monitored objectives and a full corrective-action trail.
