Overview
The BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety, Issue 9, is a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarked scheme designed to ensure the safety, legality and quality of food products manufactured and processed by suppliers. It applies to food manufacturers and processors across all categories, and is widely required by retailers and brand owners, particularly in the UK, Europe and increasingly worldwide. The Standard is built on a foundation of senior management commitment, a documented HACCP-based food safety plan aligned with Codex Alimentarius principles, and an underpinning quality management system. Its requirements are organised into fundamental clauses (non-conformity against which can prevent certification) and detailed sections covering topics such as site standards, product control, process control, personnel, and the production risk zones for high-risk, high-care and ambient high-care areas. Issue 9 places strengthened emphasis on food safety culture, product authenticity and defence against food fraud, environmental monitoring, and management of high-risk production environments, while retaining the AA+ to D grading system and the option of announced or unannounced audits. Certification is achieved through a third-party audit conducted by a certification body accredited to ISO/IEC 17065, with the audit outcome producing a grade that reflects the number and severity of non-conformities. Certificates are typically valid for twelve months, with surveillance maintained through the annual re-audit cycle and continuous compliance expectations. The main benefits include improved and demonstrable food safety performance, access to major retail and manufacturing supply chains that mandate a GFSI-recognised certificate, reduced need for second-party customer audits, greater consumer and stakeholder confidence, and a structured framework for continual improvement. The Standard also supports legal compliance and due-diligence obligations under food law across many jurisdictions, making it a benchmark reference within the global food industry.
