Overview
IFS Food version 8 is a GFSI-recognised standard for auditing the product safety and quality of food manufacturers and processors, particularly those producing or processing food or handling loose products during packing. It applies to companies at the manufacturing stage of the food supply chain and is widely required by retailers and brand owners, especially in Germany, France, Italy and other European markets, for products supplied under their own brand. The Standard is structured around several core areas, including governance and commitment from senior management, the food safety and quality management system incorporating HACCP based on Codex principles, resource management, the operational processes that plan and realise safe products, measurements, analysis and improvements, and food defence. Requirements are assessed against defined criteria that include knock-out clauses, whose failure prevents certification, and a scoring system that rates each requirement, producing an overall audit result expressed at Foundation or Higher level. Version 8 reflects updates to strengthen alignment with GFSI benchmarking requirements, sharpen the focus on food safety culture, product authenticity and fraud mitigation, and improve consistency and clarity of assessment, while retaining options for announced and unannounced audits. Certification is carried out by approved certification bodies accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 through a third-party audit, with certificates typically valid for a defined period and maintained through renewal audits. The main benefits include GFSI recognition that satisfies major retailer and manufacturer requirements, a consistent and transparent scoring approach that supports benchmarking of supplier performance, reduced need for duplicate customer audits, demonstrable control of product safety and quality, and enhanced access to European and international markets. For food manufacturers, IFS Food provides a rigorous, widely accepted framework that supports legal compliance, due diligence and continual improvement.
