Overview

ISO 44001:2017 specifies the requirements for a collaborative business relationship management system. It rests on the principles set out in ISO 44000 and is implemented with the guidance of ISO 44002, and it organises collaboration into an eight-stage life cycle: operational awareness, knowledge, internal assessment, partner selection, working together, value creation, staying together, and exit-strategy activation. Each stage carries a gate and an owner, so a partnership is entered, run and ended on documented evidence rather than on personal rapport.

Every life-cycle stage has its own procedure, from operational awareness and the collaboration business case through internal capability self-assessment, partner selection, joint governance, value creation, relationship monitoring and exit, backed by risk management, competence, internal audit, management review and corrective action. The Relationship Management Plan is the central artefact, worked alongside a joint objectives register, a partner evaluation matrix, a performance scorecard and an exit strategy plan. Guides cover the twelve principles of collaborative working (ISO TR 44000) and an implementation roadmap following ISO 44002.

What this system covers

  • Operational awareness, business case and internal assessment — why a collaboration is worth entering, and whether you are ready
  • Partner selection — evaluation criteria, due diligence and the matrix behind the decision
  • Joint governance — the Relationship Management Plan, joint objectives and shared decision rights
  • Value creation — joint improvement identified, agreed and logged rather than left to goodwill
  • Relationship monitoring — performance scorecards, behaviour assessment and issue resolution before disputes escalate
  • Exit strategy — planned disengagement, handover and closure agreed while the relationship is healthy
  • Competence and internal audit — sponsors and relationship managers prepared, clause conformity and stage-gate readiness checked

Who it's for

Alliance managers, commercial directors and bid teams working on framework agreements, alliancing contracts, joint ventures and long-term supplier partnerships in construction, defence, infrastructure, logistics and services, either asked to demonstrate ISO 44001 conformity in a tender or recovering from a collaboration that ended badly. They end with a documented relationship life cycle, a named owner at every gate, and audit evidence mapped to ISO 44001.
