Overview

The GSTC Attraction Sustainability Management System applies the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Industry Criteria — the internationally recognised baseline for sustainability in tourism enterprises — to parks, heritage sites, museums, natural areas and cultural landmarks. It follows the four GSTC pillars: sustainable management, socioeconomic impacts, cultural heritage protection, and environmental management covering energy, water and waste. They set what an attraction is assessed on: objectives and targets, legal compliance, stakeholder engagement, staff training, monitoring of visitor flows and carrying capacity, protection of sensitive natural and cultural assets, and transparent communication.

GSTC does not certify businesses itself; it accredits the certification bodies that audit attractions against standards it has recognised, making documented evidence the practical entry requirement. This system supplies that structure — a defined certification scope, policy, monitoring data, self-assessment and internal audit — for public and private attractions of any size. It sits alongside ISO 14001 and destination-level initiatives, and backs the claims travellers, tour operators and destinations increasingly ask attractions to prove.

What this system covers

  • Visitor flows and carrying capacity — visitor pressure monitored against defined limits.
  • Cultural heritage and artefacts — sensitive assets protected, interpretation that guides visitor behaviour.
  • Biodiversity, wildlife and animal welfare — habitat and species records, controls on visitor interaction.
  • Energy, water, waste and GHG emissions — consumption monitoring, emissions inventory, KPIs against targets.
  • Community and socioeconomic impact — local access, community contributions, grievance handling.
  • Suppliers, tenants and concessions — sustainability evaluation of operators trading inside your site.
  • Legal compliance and crisis readiness — legal requirements register, site and activity risk assessment, incident response.
  • Staff competence and communication — induction, role-based training, accurate promotion of the attraction.

Who it's for

Written for attraction managers and sustainability leads at parks, museums, heritage sites and protected areas preparing for a first audit against a GSTC-recognised standard, or answering a tour operator, destination body or public funder that now expects proof. You start from the self-assessment, close the gaps in your own operations, and meet the certification body with a documented system and a monitoring trail behind it.
