GSTC MICE Sustainability Management System

The GSTC MICE Sustainability Management System applies the principles of sustainable tourism to the meetings, incentives, conferences and events sector, addressing venues, organizers and suppliers involved in business events. Its purpose is to help MICE operators plan and deliver events that minimize environmental impact, generate positive social and economic benefits, and respect the host destination and community, while satisfying corporate and public clients who increasingly demand sustainable event delivery. The system draws on the GSTC Industry Criteria adapted to the MICE context and is applicable to convention centers, event venues, professional conference organizers, destination management companies and MICE service providers of varying scale. Structurally, it reflects the four GSTC pillars: sustainable management, including an event sustainability policy and management system; socioeconomic impacts supporting local suppliers and communities; cultural heritage protection; and environmental management addressing energy, water, waste, materials, catering and greenhouse gas emissions associated with events. Key requirements include a documented management system, stakeholder and supply-chain engagement, measurable objectives, waste and resource controls, responsible sourcing and transparent reporting to clients. The framework aligns closely with ISO 20121, the international event sustainability management system standard, and with the broader GSTC architecture, enabling MICE operators to integrate tourism sustainability with recognized event-management practice. The main benefits include reduced event footprints, cost savings through resource efficiency, stronger appeal to corporate clients with sustainability procurement policies, enhanced reputation and improved local economic contribution. In terms of certification context, GSTC recognizes standards and accredits certification bodies rather than certifying operators directly, so MICE providers can be independently assessed against GSTC-Recognized or GSTC-Accredited standards.
