Overview
Meetings, incentives, conferences and events put their impact somewhere other than a permanent site: in a venue booked for three days, a temporary structure, a catering contract and the materials that leave as waste. This system applies the GSTC Industry Criteria to that reality for convention centres, event venues, professional conference organisers, destination management companies and MICE service providers of varying scale. It aligns closely with ISO 20121, the international event sustainability management system standard, so tourism sustainability and recognised event-management practice run from a single set of documents.
Content follows the four GSTC pillars: sustainable management through an event sustainability policy and plan, socioeconomic impacts supporting local suppliers and communities, cultural heritage protection, and environmental management of energy, water, waste, materials, catering and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with events. Procedures reach into destination and site selection, venues and temporary structures, sustainable procurement, stakeholder collaboration, staff engagement, risk and crisis management, legal compliance and transparent reporting to clients. Records work per event and in aggregate — an event register, event risk assessments, energy and water monitoring, waste, a greenhouse-gas inventory, attendee feedback and a KPI dashboard — so a tender response can be answered with measured figures rather than statements of intent.
What this system covers
- Destination and site selection — assessing venues, temporary structures and the constraints they impose
- Event planning — the event sustainability plan, with objectives and targets set before build begins
- Procurement and materials — supplier and venue evaluation, sustainable sourcing and material choices
- On-site resources — energy and water monitoring, waste streams and the greenhouse-gas inventory
- Accessible and inclusive events — delegate experience, attendee feedback and grievance routes
- Local economy and culture — local suppliers, community contributions and heritage considerations
- Client reporting — per-event records, KPI dashboard and transparent post-event disclosure
- Assurance — legal compliance, risk and crisis management, internal audit and management review
Who it's for
Venue operations and sustainability managers, professional conference organisers and destination management companies whose corporate and public-sector clients now score sustainability inside the tender rather than asking about it afterwards. GSTC recognises standards and accredits certification bodies rather than certifying operators, so the aim is a system that withstands independent assessment and client scrutiny. Working through it leaves an organiser with a policy, an assessed supply chain, event-by-event evidence and a self-assessment against the MICE standard ready for the next bid.
