Overview
The GSTC Industry Criteria for tour operators are the internationally recognised baseline for sustainable tourism businesses, and this system applies them to inbound and outbound operators, travel agencies and packagers of any size. It follows the four pillars, from effective sustainability management under a designated responsible person, through socioeconomic benefit to host communities and cultural heritage protection, to environmental management of resource use, emissions, wildlife interactions and pollution.
What distinguishes the tour operator criteria is the weight placed on the products, suppliers and experiences an operator sells rather than only on what it owns. Supply-chain responsibility therefore runs throughout, as due diligence and sustainability evaluation of accommodation, transport and activity suppliers, a supplier register, and a tour product sustainability assessment feeding a product register. Alongside it sit accurate promotion and customer information, guiding practice at natural sites, wildlife interaction and animal welfare, a code of conduct with child protection, health, safety and crisis arrangements, guide and field staff training, community contributions, grievances, and monitoring of the operator's own energy, water, waste and greenhouse-gas footprint. The framework connects to destination-level standards and complements ISO 14001. GSTC recognises standards and accredits certification bodies rather than certifying operators, so independent assessment is what turns the documentation into a claim a partner will accept.
What this system covers
- Supplier due diligence — screening, evaluation and improvement of accommodation, transport and activity providers
- Tour product sustainability — assessing itineraries and maintaining the tour product register
- Natural sites, wildlife and animal welfare — visit rules, guide conduct and interaction limits
- Traveller communication — accurate promotion, pre-departure information, on-tour guidance and feedback
- Guides and field staff — induction, role-based training, code of conduct and child protection
- Own operations — energy and water monitoring, waste, and the greenhouse-gas inventory
- Community benefit — local sourcing, local employment and community contributions
- Assurance — legal compliance, risk and crisis, internal audit, management review and corrective action
Who it's for
Sustainability, product and operations managers at tour operators, travel agencies and destination management companies, typically when a corporate travel buyer, booking platform or trade partner begins asking for certification against a GSTC-Recognised standard, or when a supplier incident exposes a gap in due diligence. The end point is an operator able to show which suppliers were assessed and on what basis, what its itineraries were judged against, and how guides are trained to deliver them.
