Overview
UAE.S GSO 2055-2:2021 adopts the Gulf standard as a United Arab Emirates national standard, setting requirements for bodies that certify Halal products and services and for the certification process. National adoption keeps Emirati expectations aligned with the wider GCC framework while oversight stays with the UAE standardisation and conformity authorities, so a certificate issued for this market is the output of competent, impartial and rigorous conformity assessment.
It is written for the certification body, not its clients: the operating criteria the body works to, and the GSO 2055 product requirements it assesses against — permissible sources, compliant Islamic slaughter, exclusion of swine derivatives, alcohol, blood and carrion, segregation of Halal and non-Halal materials, supply-chain traceability, and control of cross-contamination in shared operations. Internal audit is mapped to ISO/IEC 17065 alongside GSO 2055-2, under committees for impartiality, Halal and Islamic affairs, and appeals.
What this system covers
- Certification lifecycle — application and contract review, documentation review, evaluation audit, decision, surveillance and recertification.
- Impartiality governance — threats assessed and treated, with auditors kept apart from those who decide.
- Sector assessment — food, cosmetics, slaughterhouses, feedstuff, packaging, medical devices, animal bone, skin and hair, and hospitality, each against its own UAE.S adoption.
- Hygiene and food safety — GMP against GSO ISO 22000 and 22716, hygiene against GSO 1694 and 21.
- Certificate and mark control — issue, renewal, suspension, reinstatement, revocation and the conditions for displaying the mark.
- Auditor competence — qualification criteria by scheme and sector, evaluation before assignment, monitoring afterwards.
- Complaints, appeals and outsourcing — challenges heard outside the decision, and control of subcontracted evaluation and laboratories.
Who it's for
Certification bodies, conformity assessment bodies and the consultants who set them up, pursuing accreditation or UAE recognition to issue Halal certificates. An accreditation application, an ISO/IEC 17065 assessment or a scheme extension into new Halal sectors brings them to it. What they take away is a scheme with written decision rules, impartiality safeguards and certificate controls, ready to brand and put in front of an assessor.
