It applies to businesses that act as an intermediary in the supply chain, taking commercial ownership or arranging the trade of goods while outsourcing production, storage and transport to third parties, and it addresses the specific risks that arise when a company influences product safety and quality without direct physical handling. The Standard is structured around senior management responsibility, a quality and product safety management system, robust supplier and outsourced-activity management, product and process specification control, traceability, and monitoring of the third parties involved in manufacturing, storing and transporting the goods being traded. It places strong emphasis on ensuring that suppliers and service providers meet appropriate safety and quality requirements, on managing risks such as fraud and product integrity, and on maintaining effective communication and contractual control across the outsourced chain. As part of the IFS family of standards, IFS Broker is intended to complement IFS Food, IFS Logistics and other schemes, providing continuity of assurance where trading activities sit between certified manufacturers and customers. Certification is performed by approved certification bodies through a third-party audit using the IFS scoring approach, with certificates valid for a defined period and maintained through renewal audits.
