Overview
IFS Broker version 3.2 certifies agents, brokers, traders and importers who buy and sell food, packaging materials or household and personal care products without manufacturing or storing them on their own premises. They take commercial ownership or arrange the trade of goods while production, storage and transport sit with third parties. The Standard exists for the risk that creates: a company can shape product safety and quality while never handling the product.
Requirements run from senior management responsibility and the quality and product safety management system through supplier and outsourced-activity management, specification control, traceability, and monitoring of the third parties that manufacture, store and transport the traded goods. Emphasis falls on holding suppliers and service providers to appropriate safety and quality requirements, on fraud and product integrity, and on contractual control across the outsourced chain. IFS Broker complements IFS Food and IFS Logistics, keeping assurance continuous where trading sits between certified manufacturers and customers. Approved certification bodies audit using the IFS scoring approach, with certificates valid for a defined period and renewed by audit.
What this system covers
- Supplier approval and purchasing: evaluation criteria, approved supplier list and agreed specifications
- Outsourced logistics: control and monitoring of the third parties storing and moving product
- Traceability through a chain you do not own, proven by testing and mock recall
- Food fraud mitigation and product defence, from vulnerability assessment to the controls that follow
- Contract review, specification management, product development, and packaging and labelling control
- Product analyses and testing, quarantine and release decisions, complaint handling and corrective action
- Knock-out requirements and the IFS scoring model, self-assessed before the certification body arrives
Who it's for
Brokers, agents, importers and trading companies sitting between certified manufacturers and retail, foodservice or industrial customers, often a small office team with no site and no warehouse. The trigger is a customer that will buy only from IFS Broker certified suppliers, or an audit date agreed before any documented system exists. They come out with a proportionate system recording how third parties are selected, specified, monitored and held to account.
