Overview
ISO 46001:2019 is the international standard for water efficiency management systems. It asks an organisation to account for its water use, find opportunities to consume less, put water-efficient technologies and practices in place and keep improving — cutting cost and easing pressure on a strained resource. It fits any type, size or sector, and matters most to water-intensive operations and sites in water-stressed regions: manufacturing, agriculture, commercial property, hospitality and public institutions.
Built on the ISO High-Level Structure and the PDCA cycle, it runs from a water use review identifying significant water uses, through a baseline and water efficiency indicators, to objectives, targets and a water efficiency management plan tracked to completion. The set provides the WEMS manual, policy and management plan, with procedures from risk assessment and operational control through purchasing, calibration and monitoring to audit, review and root cause corrective action. Guidance covers water balance methodology, indicator setting and reduce-reuse-recycle opportunities; the system sits beside ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 and feeds water stewardship and ESG reporting.
What this system covers
- Water use review and water balance — intake, use, losses and discharge mapped, significant uses identified
- Baseline and water efficiency indicators — normalised against business activity, so improvement is measured fairly
- Water efficiency management plan — objectives, targets, action plans and monitoring of delivery
- Reduce, reuse and recycle opportunities — evaluating and prioritising the measures the review exposes
- Operational control and metering — control plans, site inspection and calibration of measuring devices
- Purchasing and external providers — suppliers and contractors whose work affects water performance
- Legal and other requirements — abstraction, discharge and reporting obligations tracked and evaluated
- Competence, audit and readiness — awareness and auditor training, toolbox talks and clause-wise audit
Who it's for
Site, utilities and EHS managers at plants, hotels, hospitals and campuses facing rising tariffs, abstraction limits or a group water-reduction target, and consultants extending an ISO 14001 or ISO 50001 system to cover water. The end state is a defensible water baseline, indicators reported on a set cycle, an action plan with named owners, and records showing whether water performance improved.
