Overview

SA8000 is the certifiable social accountability standard developed by Social Accountability International to protect workers' rights and promote decent, ethical working conditions. It is built on international norms, including relevant International Labour Organization conventions, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other human rights instruments, and applies to organisations of any size and sector worldwide, carrying most weight in manufacturing, agriculture and other labour-intensive industries. Being certifiable, it allows independent audit and certification by an accredited body, which is what turns a self-declaration into third-party assurance for customers, workers and stakeholders.

The documentation covers the nine core areas: child labour; forced or compulsory labour; health and safety; freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining; discrimination; disciplinary practices; working hours; remuneration; and the management system that ties them together. That management system obligation — set policy, assign responsibility, involve workers, monitor performance, manage suppliers, address complaints, improve continually — is carried down into the evidence that proves it: team minutes, risk registers, overtime and payroll records, age verification and supplier questionnaires, with a gap analysis and readiness check over the top.

What this system covers

  • Child labour and young worker protection — proof of age at hiring and a documented remediation route
  • Forced or compulsory labour — free and fair recruitment, employment and termination
  • Working hours, wages and benefits — overtime records, payroll verification and living wage assessment
  • Health and safety — inspection routine, hazard control and the evidence trail behind both
  • Freedom of association, collective bargaining, non-discrimination and disciplinary practice
  • Worker involvement — social performance team, stakeholder engagement and social dialogue
  • Supplier control — self-assessment, code of conduct acknowledgement and evaluation
  • Monitoring, internal audit, management review and public reporting

Who it's for

Employers, HR and compliance managers in labour-intensive operations, brands sourcing responsibly, social auditors and worker representatives, usually where a buyer has made verified social accountability a condition of contract or an audit date is set. You get the policies, procedures and record formats an auditor works through, and a self-assessment that exposes gaps while there is time to close them. This is a documentation kit: the certification decision stays with the accredited audit body.
