Overview

Logistics operators reach Halal certification through their customers: the goods arrived certified, and the warehouse or the fleet has to be shown not to break that status. The system follows the SMI-005 technical scheme for warehouses and distribution, built on OIC/SMIIC 1, the Halal food standard of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), an affiliated body of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and on OIC/SMIIC 17, its Halal supply chain standards for transportation, warehousing and retailing, with certifying bodies working to OIC/SMIIC 2.

Carriers and loads are assessed before acceptance, with haulier, container and cargo judged against defined criteria, and a vehicle or item of equipment that previously carried prohibited material is cleaned and ritually cleansed before returning to Halal work. Co-loading is settled in advance rather than at the dock. Seals, shipment documentation and labelling carry Halal identity across each handover, and the dispatch and traceability record makes a consignment followable in both directions.

What this system covers

  • Carrier and load assessment — hauliers, containers and cargo checked before acceptance
  • Receiving and storage — supplier Halal certificates checked against goods presented; location, segregation and cold chain logged
  • Layout, flow and cross-contamination control — the building arranged so streams cannot converge
  • Equipment segregation and vehicle cleansing — ritual cleansing where prohibited materials were carried
  • Shipping, co-loading and seals — transport arrangements, seal control and shipment documentation
  • Order picking, handling and returns — identity protected in break-bulk and reverse flows
  • Hygiene, pest control and audit response — sanitation, internal audit, corrective action and recall

Who it's for

A third-party logistics operator, distributor, freight forwarder or contract warehouse told by a SMIIC-certified customer that its part of the chain now sits inside the certified scope. The operations or QA manager has to turn Halal requirements into dock-floor instructions: which vehicle may be loaded, what may travel with what, when a trailer needs cleansing, what goes on the seal record, and the audit trail a certification body will ask to see.
