Overview

ISO 21401 sets sustainability management requirements for accommodation establishments across the environmental, social and economic dimensions of running a property. Its annexes are what an assessor works from — Annex A environmental, Annex B social, Annex C economic — and this set turns each into working documents: a management system manual and sustainability policy, then procedures for context and interested parties, issue identification and evaluation, objectives and programmes, guest communication, sustainable procurement, resource and waste management, biodiversity and landscaping, hazardous substances, emergency preparedness, community engagement and cultural heritage, and labour practices.

Records carry the evidence a certifier, tour operator or corporate buyer asks to see: energy and water consumption logs, waste tracking and diversion, supplier evaluation, guest satisfaction surveys and corrective action reports. Checklists convert clauses 4 to 10 and the Annex A to C requirements into daily and weekly routines for front of house, housekeeping, maintenance and procurement. Training modules build awareness and audit competence, and guidance covers the implementation roadmap, sustainable practices, KPI reporting and certification readiness.

What this system covers

  • Annex A environmental requirements — energy, water, waste, hazardous substances, biodiversity and landscaping
  • Annex B social requirements — labour practices, equity and working conditions, community and cultural heritage
  • Annex C economic requirements — long-term commercial viability, sustainable procurement and supplier evaluation
  • Consumption and waste data — energy and water logging, waste tracking and diversion as the basis for KPIs
  • Guest-facing and departmental routines — guest communication and satisfaction, with daily and weekly checks
  • Emergency preparedness and incidents — environmental response, incident reporting and corrective action
  • Governance and audit — clauses 4 to 10 gap assessment, internal audit and management review

Who it's for

Owners, general managers and quality or sustainability leads at hotels, resorts and lodges assessed against tour operator criteria, green travel platform standards or corporate buyer questionnaires, and properties preparing for certification to ISO 21401. Documents are editable to property type, size and location; the outcome is measured consumption, evaluated suppliers, trained staff and audit records standing behind the claims made to guests.
