The BRCGS Storage and Distribution Standard provides a certification framework for organisations that store, distribute, handle and wholesale food, packaging and consumer products, addressing the part of the supply chain between manufacture and the final customer. It applies to warehousing, distribution, transport, wholesale and contracted logistics operations, and is relevant to companies that take ownership of or physically handle products, including those offering value-added services such as case-picking, labelling, blending or repacking. The Standard is structured around senior management commitment, a hazard and risk analysis approach to identify safety, quality and integrity threats, and a supporting management system covering site and building standards, product control, cleaning and housekeeping, pest management, personnel practices, transport and vehicle management, and stock control. Optional voluntary modules extend the scope to activities such as wholesaling, contracted services, and e-commerce fulfilment, allowing certification to reflect the specific operations of the site. By focusing on the storage and distribution stage, it complements the BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety and other GFSI-recognised manufacturing standards, ensuring continuity of safety, traceability and product integrity throughout the supply chain. Certification is carried out by an accredited certification body through a third-party audit, with outcomes graded according to the number and significance of non-conformities and certificates generally valid for twelve months subject to ongoing surveillance.
