Overview
IFS PACsecure version 3 is a certification standard for the safety and quality of packaging materials, covering the manufacture and conversion of primary and secondary packaging used for food, household and personal care, and other consumer products. It applies to producers of packaging across a range of materials, including plastics, paper and board, glass, metal and flexible materials, and addresses the specific risks that packaging can pose to the products it contains, such as migration, contamination and functional failure. The Standard follows the common IFS structure, with requirements organised around senior management responsibility and governance, a product safety and quality management system incorporating hazard analysis and risk assessment appropriate to packaging manufacture, resource management, the operational processes that design and produce compliant packaging, and measurement, analysis and improvement. It gives particular attention to material suitability and intended use, hygiene, foreign-body and contamination control, traceability, product defence and fraud mitigation, and compliance with legal and customer requirements for packaging that may come into contact with food or sensitive products. As a member of the IFS portfolio, IFS PACsecure shares the IFS methodology and scoring approach and is intended to align with GFSI benchmarking for packaging, complementing food-manufacturing standards such as IFS Food and FSSC 22000 within the broader supply chain. Certification is carried out by approved certification bodies through a third-party audit using the IFS scoring system with knock-out criteria, with certificates issued for a defined validity period and maintained through renewal audits.
