Overview

Packaging is a Halal input in its own right, and this documentation covers the manufacture and handling of materials destined for Halal products. It folds five frameworks into one set of controls — the OIC/SMIIC series, GSO, UAE.S, JAKIM and SJPH — on the strictest common criterion, so one system stands in all five jurisdictions. Halal criteria are set during design and development rather than at final inspection, and an internal Halal committee approves materials and suppliers, runs audits and drives corrective action.

The pressure to certify comes from the customer: a food or cosmetics manufacturer holding Halal certification has to account for what it fills, wraps and labels with, so its packaging supplier is drawn into somebody else's audit. An origin question that cannot be answered about an ink or an adhesive becomes the brand owner's problem first, so the evidence has to exist at material level before a job runs.

What this system covers

  • Material composition — substrates, coatings, inks, adhesives and release agents screened for prohibited animal derivatives and impermissible alcohol.
  • Animal-origin inputs — stearates, glycerine and comparable materials traced to source before a supplier is approved.
  • Design and development — Halal criteria written into the specification, with a risk assessment behind each material.
  • Line dedication and changeover — verified cleaning between runs, with ritual cleansing (sertu) after a non-permissible material.
  • Premises hygiene, pest control and segregated storage — identification held from intake through to dispatch.
  • Halal mark and claim control — label artwork checked against the materials a job actually ran.
  • Traceability, recall and complaints — lots followed to the customer who used them, complaints traced back to the material behind them.

Who it's for

Packaging converters, film and carton manufacturers and label printers supplying customers who hold Halal certification. They are usually answering a brand owner's questionnaire that has begun asking about animal derivatives and alcohol content, or a first application to a scheme the plant has never documented against. The end state is material approval, line control and traceability in one place.
