A UAE aquaculture farm is assessed on its records, on the principle that if it is not recorded, it did not happen.
Overview
UAE.S 5043-1:2021, Sustainable Management Systems for Aquaculture, Part 1: Responsible Farming, is a recent national standard and, for most farms, an unfamiliar one. It is implemented here as a complete controlled system covering the working life of a site: farm siting and design, legal and regulatory compliance, water quality and environmental protection, biosecurity and genetic integrity, fish health, disease and chemical management, movement of live aquatic organisms, product verification and release, traceability and mass balance, waste management and HACCP-based food safety.
The architecture is deliberately teachable: numbered folders, every document belonging to exactly one of them under a unique identifier, and a Records Index setting out what counts as a record and the minimum retention for each type of evidence. The daily templates — the water quality monitoring log, the stocking and quarantine record, the veterinary drug register — sit beside verification checklists, so a farm manager captures the day as it happens instead of reconstructing it before an assessment. Structure and numbering match the Organic Feed system for Part 2.
What this system covers
- Site selection, design and regulatory compliance — siting decisions and legal obligations on a UAE farm
- Water quality and environmental protection — monitored parameters and response to deviation
- Biosecurity and genetic integrity — stocking, quarantine and prevention of escapes
- Fish health, disease and chemical management — veterinary drug register and treatment control
- Feed, energy and resource use — recording consumption and using inputs responsibly
- Traceability and mass balance — from stocking through harvest to product release
- Food safety and HACCP — prerequisite programmes and hazard control at harvest
- Worker welfare, incidents and continuity — occupational health and safety and incident reporting
Who it's for
Aquaculture farms and fish production units in the UAE, their farm and hatchery managers, quality and sustainability managers, and consultants supporting UAE.S 5043 conformity. Most arrive because conformity has become a condition of trading or of a customer relationship, and they gain a system a farm crew can run, with the evidence trail designed rather than assembled afterwards.
